It is a secular and non-political not for profit organization, registered under the Societies Act 1860.

Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh states.Set up in the year 1999, genesis of PRERANA can be traced back to the increasing awareness and consequent faith of its founders in voluntary action as they completed their formal education. With an urge to do something for the underprivileged, they decided to start their journey imbued with a spirit of voluntarism. PRERANA currently works with nearly 4,10,000 households and thereby directly reaches out to about 11,00,000 people across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh states.

Our vision is “To build a society that provides equal economic and social opportunities to all its members irrespective of caste, class, sex, age and other such divisive considerations”.

Our mission is “To empower the most disadvantaged sections of the society so as to accelerate their socio-economic development, thereby making them responsible citizens and partners of progress”.

PRERANA is guided by the principle that for the poor communities to be able to access opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, they must first be enabled. We adopt participatory processes in our work with the people, making available ideas and technologies in a manner that enhances the poor’s access to and control over their resources. These resources, in turn, aid in the improvement of their lives, in organizing them into appropriate peoples’ institutions at various levels, in improving their bargaining power, in enhancing their ability to deal with mainstream systems, provide sustainability to the interventions and contribute to lasting improvements in their socio-economic situations.

We strive to reduce poverty by enhancing livelihood opportunities through promotion of sustainable use of natural resources and community empowerment, especially that of women. We support concrete livelihood interventions in local contexts after the thorough analysis of specific environments. Following the value chain approach, we constantly seek to extend interventions that are sharper, more relevant and aided by a thorough process of action, reflection, and learning.

PRERANA has rich experience in working with government institutions, civil society organizations, corporate agencies, research institutions and community based organizations. We are directly implementing development projects in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states of India and working with local partners on several assignments across Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttarakhand, states of India.
