Sanitation and solid waste management are at the core of sustainable development, and underpin public health, economic capability and have positive spin-offs for environmental sustainability. However, India’s rural and urban locations are mired with problems of poor sanitation and solid waste management. Lack of toilets has been a persistent problem in rural and peri-urban locations.
Similarly, mountains of uncollected garbage are a perpetual problem for most urban locations. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on water and sanitation, adopted by United Nations provide the blueprint for ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
In line with SDG 6, PRERANA addresses the twin issues of sanitation and solid waste management through a wide range of activities including, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, promotion of better hygiene practices, solid waste management through door-to-door waste collection, waste segregation, composting, construction of low cost toilets in rural areas and urban slums and capacity building support to municipal corporations.
PRERANA follows the principles of Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) in its approach towards municipal waste handling which involves application of suitable technologies and management programs covering all types of solid wastes from all sources to achieve the twin objectives of (a) waste reduction and (b) effective management of waste still produced after waste reduction.
